1924, Director D.W. Griffith
Accompaniment: Sanna Pietiäinen orchestra
Griffith had filmed the Germans as being cruel and barbaric during the war, when he made Maailman sydän (Heart of the World) (1918), but 6 years later his sympathies were with a government fallen into chaos. Filmed through the eyes of a Polish emigrant, this little story of survival is one of his best and a fine example showing that despite having failed, a director hasn’t lost his powers of observation or skills for making films. Griffith’s last independent production and last film for United Artists is also Carol Dempster’s best acting performance.
